In the latest episode of the Broken Traditions Podcast, we explore the duality of Kamala Harris’ presidential candidacy and its implications for Black culture. Titled "The Gift and The Curse of Kamala Harris’ Candidacy," this episode provides a deep dive into how her historic run for the highest office in the United States reflects both the progress and challenges within the Black community.
The Gift: Breaking Away from Toxic Traditions
Kamala Harris' rise to the Democratic nomination reveals significant shifts in how the Black community engages with politics. For the first time, we see a powerful display of political influence and unity among Black women, who were instrumental in pushing Harris to the forefront. On the day of her announcement, 44,000 Black women raised over $1 million in just three hours, showing a new level of financial backing that has been sorely needed in our political strategy. This unprecedented move away from blind identity politics, where support is given based on race alone, signals a growing maturity in how we navigate the political landscape.
The Curse: Holding Onto Toxic Traditions
However, this same candidacy also exposes the toxic traditions we have yet to shake. The lack of policy-based support for Harris is concerning, with many backing her solely because of her potential to make history rather than her political platform. This blind allegiance is a recurring issue in our community, where symbolic victories often overshadow substantive change. Additionally, Harris' candidacy has deepened the divide between Black men and women, particularly as more Black men step away from the Democratic Party, only to be labeled as sell-outs. Lastly, the ongoing controversy over Harris' racial identity highlights the moving goalposts of "Blackness," a debate that continues to divide rather than unite us.
A Critical Mirror to Black Culture
This episode holds up a mirror to Black culture, reflecting both our strides forward and the areas where we continue to falter. As we examine three examples of how Harris' candidacy is a gift and three examples of why it is a curse, we invite you to join the conversation and consider the critical steps needed to truly break away from toxic traditions and move forward as a community.
